The importance of having a functional French drain

A French drain serves an important purpose: this piping system drains rainwater that accumulates near the foundation and creates pressure against the concrete. Over time, weakened concrete can deteriorate and crack, allowing water to infiltrate the structure.
It is therefore important that your French drain functions properly in order to preserve the strength and load-bearing capacity of your foundation.
With active cracks — cracks that continue to widen over time — water can infiltrate into your basement or crawl space, creating moisture and mold problems.
You must ensure that your drain pipes are not clogged with debris, broken by roots or destabilized by soil movement.

Waterproof membrane

During French drain installation or foundation crack repair work, we generally excavate down to the footing of the foundation slab.
We therefore recommend that our clients install a waterproof membrane on the concrete foundation walls to protect them against water pressure and cracking.
This will help protect your property against water infiltration and concrete deterioration for many years.

Our French drain installation methods

Before beginning excavation work, we must contact your municipality to determine the regulations and standards that must be followed. A permit is required before the work can begin.

We must also contact Info-Excavation to identify the location of underground infrastructure such as pipes and telecommunications cables.

We then plan the layout of the pipes and determine the drainage outlet location, either toward the sewer system or a sump pit. Next, we excavate around the foundation walls down to the footing in order to create trenches for the drainage system. A slope of six inches for every fifteen meters is maintained.

We then install a base of crushed stone on which we place the 4-inch perforated pipes. These pipes run around the entire perimeter of the house.

The pipes are then covered with crushed stone and a geotextile membrane. This membrane prevents soil from entering the system while still allowing water to flow through.

Finally, our team backfills the excavated soil and restores the landscaping. Grass can be planted or sod can be installed.

Sewer and water lines

Problems involving sewer and water lines can lead to costly damage if they are not detected and addressed as quickly as possible.
Tree roots can clog or break pipes, and lines may also become blocked by waste flushed down toilets. Odors begin to rise, wastewater backs up into the basement or crawl space drain, and water drains more slowly.
In these situations, the pipes can often be unclogged using an auger or a high-pressure water jet.
However, if the pipe materials have deteriorated — such as rusted, cracked or broken pipes, or weakened joints — replacement becomes necessary.
Pipes may also have shifted due to soil movement, creating an insufficient slope and poor drainage performance. In that case, the system must be repositioned so the slope complies with standards.
The team at MAXIUM EXCAVATION offers sewer and potable water line repair, unclogging and replacement services. Our services are available for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional properties.
We locate the pipes and inspect them with a camera to determine whether they are clogged, rusted or broken by roots. To do so, we insert the camera through the sewer cleanout. We also verify whether the water pressure is adequate.
During replacement work, we connect the system to the municipal line and install a backwater valve, which is mandatory in many municipalities.
For potable water service line work, we can unclog or replace damaged pipes, install the shutoff valve and connect the system to the water meter. We also replace lead pipes, since lead is toxic even in very small quantities.
Finally, we backfill and compact the area before replanting grass or installing sod.
