What is the purpose of a French drain?

“Water service lines” is a term used to describe the pipes that carry water into and out of buildings. The water entry line brings potable water into a building from the municipal watermain. The sewer line carries wastewater from toilets to the municipal sewer system or septic tank, while the storm sewer line evacuates rainwater coming from the French drain, basement drain (sump pit) and roof drainage system.
MAXIUM EXCAVATION offers sewer and water service repair services for all three types of piping systems in residential, commercial and institutional settings. For any issue involving your water or drainage systems, contact us so we can perform an inspection followed by the repair, unclogging or replacement of defective pipes. We also connect water entry lines to the municipal network.

Sewer systems

When it comes to sewer or watermain pipes, even small problems should be taken seriously. Here are some warning signs to watch for:
  • Unpleasant odors: do you frequently notice unpleasant smells in the bathroom, basement or near plumbing lines? This may indicate a more serious issue, such as a break in a sewer pipe.

These small cracks can allow sewer gases to escape and rise into your building. If the odor occurs frequently, it should never be ignored. Prompt repairs can help prevent more severe damage over time.

  • Mold growth: microscopic fungi often develop in walls, floors or ceilings because a sewer or water pipe has been broken by roots or another obstruction. A continuous water leak should never be overlooked.

  • Slow or inefficient drainage: when water drains poorly from sinks, showers, bathtubs or toilets, this usually indicates a partial blockage in the pipes. This issue can quickly lead to wastewater backups.

In addition, soil settlement beneath the pipes can alter their slope, preventing proper drainage and worsening the problem.

  • Health concerns: old lead pipes can make your water unsafe and dangerous to your health. Serious health problems may eventually develop.

It is strongly recommended to contact sewer and water service repair professionals as soon as these warning signs appear.

How we handle the work

In any problematic situation, our team begins with a camera inspection. We then explain to our clients the solutions that are available.

In the case of blocked pipes, we clean them using a powerful suction hose. We can also repair cracks from the inside using an inflatable liner system that applies an adhesive directly at the location of the crack.

For broken pipes, a partial or complete replacement may be required. Excavation work is then performed only at the location of the problem.

If the damage is located on municipal property — for example near the street where the water entry or sewer connection is located — the municipality is responsible for the work. A permit may also be required for certain types of repairs.

When sewer or watermain pipes need to be replaced, the team at MAXIUM EXCAVATION performs the excavation, connects the potable water and sewer lines to the municipal main lines, installs a backwater valve to prevent backups, installs the shutoff valve and connects the watermain to the water meter.

Once the work is completed, we backfill the trench and install new sod.

Our excavation and grading contractor license authorizes us to perform complete or partial sewer and watermain pipe replacements, including water service lines.
