What are sewer and water service lines?

A sewer line is the pipe that carries wastewater from a building to the municipal sewer system. Inside the building, this pipe includes a cleanout connection that, once unscrewed, allows the line to be cleaned toward the street.
The water service line carries potable water from the municipal watermain to a property. Inside the building, the water entry includes a valve that allows the water supply to be completely shut off.

Does the municipality have to pay?

When a water service line is damaged and the exterior shutoff valve is located a few feet from the edge of the road, it is important to determine whether the damage is on the municipal side or on your property.
If the damage is located on the municipality’s side, you will not have to pay anything.

Signs to watch for

Installation according to industry standards

Sewer pipes must be installed on a slope so wastewater can flow by gravity. This slope must be between 1% and 2% (10 to 20 millimeters per meter). Sewer cleanouts must also be installed to allow for inspection and pipe unclogging.
The depth of excavation required for sewer and water service line installation depends on the type of soil, municipal regulations and the depth of your municipality’s main service line.
