Why are French drains so important?

Like gutters, French drains are essential for directing rainwater and groundwater away from the foundation in order to prevent foundation cracks and water infiltration in concrete foundations.

This powerful drainage system consists of 4-inch perforated pipes that carry water as far away from the foundation as possible, toward the sump pit or sewer system.

Steps involved in French drain installation

  1. Before excavating trenches around your foundation, we contact your municipality to determine whether there are any specific regulations or requirements to follow.
    We also contact Info-Excavation to identify the location of underground infrastructure such as water supply and drainage pipes (watermain and sewer), telecommunications cables and other buried utilities.
  2. We then excavate trenches around your foundation down to the footing while maintaining the proper slope for water drainage.
  3. At the bottom of the trench, we install a layer of crushed stone on which the pipes are placed and then covered with additional crushed stone. A geotextile membrane is then installed over the system before backfilling.
  4. We can also apply a waterproof membrane to your foundation walls that is specifically designed to protect them and prevent water from entering your basement.
    This membrane helps prevent the concrete from deteriorating under water pressure and from cracking.

What is the purpose of a French drain?

A French drain is a system designed to evacuate water that accumulates around a home’s foundation. It consists of pipes buried in a trench partially filled with stone and covered with soil. The water collected by the drain is directed to the municipal storm sewer or sanitary sewer system.

The installation of this drainage system is mandatory for all types of residential buildings, and its expected lifespan is generally between 30 and 40 years, after which foundation drain repair may become necessary.

Causes of French drain failure

In addition to the aging of the drain itself, several other factors can reduce drainage efficiency, such as soil movement, roots, rocks, clay or iron ochre. The impact of these factors will eventually lead to the need for foundation drain repair.
